Jazz Gillum - Sweet Sweet Woman (1938)
William McKinley "Jazz" Gillum, vocal and harmonica, with Big Bill Broonzy, rhythm guitar, and George Barnes, electric guitar. Barnes was the first musician to record with an electric guitar, on records with Broonzy on March 1, 1938. Two weeks later he made six recordings, including this one, with Jazz Gillum. Barnes was only sixteen years old at the time, and went on to have a long successful career as a jazz guitarist.
I like the way that the tempo doubles up on this number, at 1:35.

Parts One and Two of Billy Bird's "Alabama Blues," two of the four numbers recorded at his only session of October 1928. His other two songs, "Mill Man Blues" and "Down In The Cemetery" are also available on YT. One of three numbers by Carl Martin that all use the same basic guitar accompaniment. The other two are "Kid Man Blues" and "Crow Jane" (both available on YT). Great version. Yeah, the Spirit lawsuit was bogus. Maybe the composer of Cry Me a River (Arthur Hamilton) should have gone after both Spirit and Led Zeppelin. <sarcasm> Ps. I met Arthur in traffic school and we ended up writing four songs together. Wonderful man.

Some of the major riffs remind me of 'Santa Baby' by Eartha Kitt from 1953. A smooth combination of what was Santa Baby & the proto-version of Stairway... another masterpiece.

The surviving photo of JCF with Elvis in 1957 in Memphis when Jackson was about 13 is a classic. Yes we have 12 seconds of JCF but none of NIck Drake so I guess we are fortunate here. Jackson made it to London with the help of a $100,000 insurance settlement he got at age 21 from the school fire that took the lives of several of his classmates and physically and mentally tortured him for years. Marlene Dupont was one of the lost classmates (and subject of one of his most memorable songs). I was surprised to learn that John Renbourn communicated and met JCF in the 1990s (he was there for those early years of Sandy Denny performing at folk clubs and also seeing JCF perform). At the time, JCF was considered the rising star and far superior to Paul Simon who was living at the same residence with JCF and others).
